Tran Quoc Tuan, one of Asia's leading football administrators, has been appointed to oversee football operations at the upcoming Asian Games (ASIAD). This decision not only affirms the rising status of Vietnamese football within the AFC and FIFA power structures but also sets high expectations for the Vietnam U23 team preparing for the tournament.
Specifically, according to sources from the Asian Football Confederation, Tran Quoc Tuan – who previously held similar roles at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou 2026 and the 17th Asian Games in Incheon 2026 – will again lead the football operations department for both men's and women's football at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, in September 2026. This marks the third time he has been entrusted with this responsibility, demonstrating the AFC's absolute confidence in his organizational and management capabilities.
Beyond his ASIAD role, Tran Quoc Tuan currently holds several key positions in global football governance. He is a member of the FIFA Men's National Team Competitions Committee for the 2026–2029 term, a body that advises the FIFA Council on the strategy, organization, and management of major international competitions. Within the AFC, he serves on the AFC Executive Committee and chairs the AFC Competitions Committee – a position considered to have direct influence over the schedules, formats, and slots for clubs and national teams across Asia.
This concentration of power, though rare for an official from a developing football nation like Vietnam, reflects a deliberate strategy of increasing administrative influence. In Asian football, administrative power often correlates with competitive advantages: countries with representatives on key committees find it easier to secure hosting rights, adjust match schedules favorably, and access development resources. With the chairmanship of the AFC Competitions Committee, Tran Quoc Tuan can directly impact the framework of the very competitions in which Vietnamese teams participate.
Meanwhile, the Vietnam U23 team under head coach Dinh Hong Vinh is entering the final preparation phase for the ASIAD. According to the plan, the official squad list will be announced on September 9, followed by a team gathering on September 12 and departure for Japan on September 13. This is an extremely tight schedule, with only three days of domestic assembly before flying to the host nation, making tactical and fitness preparations more challenging than ever.
In the group stage, Vietnam U23 are placed in Group C alongside Kuwait, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan. The specific fixtures: vs Kuwait on September 15, vs the Philippines on September 18, and vs Uzbekistan on September 22. This is a group with increasing difficulty: Kuwait and the Philippines are within reach of Vietnam U23, while Uzbekistan is traditionally a powerhouse in Asian youth football. With the format allowing the top two teams from each group to advance to the quarterfinals, the first two matches are seen as 'early finals' – if Vietnam secures good results against Kuwait and the Philippines, they will have a psychological and physical advantage for the decisive match against Uzbekistan.
Another notable point is that this year's tournament features only 15 teams instead of the usual 16. The organizing committee has divided them into four groups, three of which have four teams and one with three teams. This anomaly may result in uneven rest periods between groups. For Vietnam U23, with three group matches in 8 days (from September 15 to 22), fitness management and squad rotation will be crucial, especially if the team advances deep into the knockout stage lasting until October 4.
Assessing Vietnam U23's potential, experts believe that reaching the quarterfinals is a realistic target. If they advance from the group stage as winners or runners-up, they will face strong opponents from other groups, featuring top continental football nations. However, the advantage brought by Tran Quoc Tuan's deep understanding of the tournament format – through his operational role – could help the team and coaching staff prepare better administratively and scheduling-wise.
Another perspective worth considering is the overlap of Tran Quoc Tuan's roles. The fact that one person simultaneously chairs the AFC Competitions Committee – the body that decides competition formats – and oversees football at the ASIAD may raise questions about impartiality, although this remains within regulatory frameworks and international practice. The underdog in this narrative is the smaller federations, who may fear that concentrated power will favor a specific nation. However, with extensive experience across three ASIAD editions and trust from both FIFA and AFC, Tran Quoc Tuan is expected to execute his duties transparently and fairly.
Vietnamese football is entering a new phase, where success is measured not only by on-field results but also by boardroom standing. Tran Quoc Tuan holding top responsibilities at AFC and FIFA while directly running a major tournament like the ASIAD is a clear signal of the nation's football ambitions. If the U23 team can leverage this administrative advantage for optimal preparation, the tournament in Japan could open a promising new chapter.
