Moldova dominate 51st Balkan Senior Championships: Ursu completes a treble in Sarajevo

Sarajevo witnessed one of Moldova's most memorable table tennis weeks in recent years. Vladislav Ursu left the 51st Balkan Senior Championships with three titles: men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles. He also led Moldova to the men's team title with Andrei Putuntica, beating Serbia 3-2 in the final. The two Moldovans then met in an all-Moldovan men's singles final, which Ursu won 4-1. According to the European Table Tennis Union, the event ran from 15 to 19 September in Sarajevo. The field included Moldova, Serbia, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Türkiye, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a regional competition below WTT tier, with no documented world-ranking points or prize money. Romania's Adina Diaconu won the women's singles with three 4-0 sweeps in the knockout rounds. Serbia took the women's team title; Türkiye won the women's doubles with Büşra Demir; Ursu and Bulgaria's Hristova captured the mixed doubles. Analytically, Ursu's path showed a rising trend: 4-3 in the quarter-final, 4-0 in the semi-final and 4-1 in the final. The sample is too small for strong conclusions. The result should not be mistaken for proof of European-level dominance, as Germany, France and Sweden were absent. The next ETTU or WTT event will be the real test.
